What Mandatory Training Do Domiciliary Care Staff Need?
Updated: Oct 11
There is no safe one-size-fits-all list of training for every domiciliary care worker. Employers must identify statutory, mandatory and role-specific knowledge and competence from legislation, regulation, service risks, job duties and the needs of people supported.
What practical compliance work showed me
A certificate list can look complete while practice remains unsafe. In care compliance work, I learned to separate four things: learning assigned, learning completed, knowledge understood and practical competence observed. A good matrix shows all four.
Skills for Care publishes current statutory and mandatory training guidance. The updated Care Certificate standards provide a foundation for relevant workers and now contain 16 standards.
Common core areas
Depending on the service and role, training may include safeguarding, health and safety, infection prevention, moving and assisting, medication, food safety, fire safety, equality, communication, privacy, mental capacity, first aid and person-centred care.
Add role- and person-specific learning
Staff may also need epilepsy, diabetes, dysphagia, catheter care, positive behaviour support, autism, learning disability, dementia, end-of-life care, delegated healthcare activities or equipment competency. Match training to the actual support delivered.
Build a useful matrix
Record the role requirement, legal or risk basis, learning method, completion, assessment, observed competence, refresher date and restrictions. Review after incidents, care-plan changes, audit findings and new guidance. Do not rely only on annual expiry dates.
