CQC Mock Inspection or Compliance Snapshot: Which Fits?
Updated: Oct 11
An approaching CQC assessment can prompt a search for a “mock inspection”. Before booking one, ask what the consultant will actually review. The phrase does not define a standard CQC service. A visit that includes observations and staff conversations is different from a focused remote look at a few records. Both can be useful when the scope matches your question.
Start with the question you need answered
Do you have a particular worry: perhaps an audit identifies repeated medicines recording gaps, but the action log does not show whether changes worked? A focused sample review can help you identify urgent gaps and decide what to do first. If you want a broader view of how practice works across a service, ask for a specifically scoped review and check what evidence, conversations and written output it includes.
CQC itself assesses services against five key questions and quality statements. It can gather evidence on and off site across six evidence categories. A consultant’s review of a limited sample cannot replicate CQC’s assessment or reliably forecast a rating.
What the £249 Compliance Snapshot covers
Looking Glass Care’s £249 Compliance Snapshot is for adult social care providers in England who want a focused check. We agree a sample of compliance evidence in advance and prepare from it, then hold a one-hour remote review to discuss urgent gaps and priority actions. The preparation is included in the price and does not eat into the meeting hour.
For example, a manager might share an agreed sample comprising a recent audit, the related action log and a few relevant records with personal information handled appropriately. In the discussion, we might trace whether the identified issue has an owner, whether an action was completed and what would demonstrate that practice improved. This is a fictional illustration, not a finding about any provider.
A Snapshot is not an on-site inspection, a whole-service audit or a promise that every gap will be found. It does not include a full written improvement plan or follow-up call. We agree the records before work starts so you know the boundary of the review.
When a written plan or wider review makes sense
If several concerns need to be ranked, assigned and tracked, the £495 Care Provider Compliance Review may fit better. It includes a pre-review questionnaire, review of an agreed evidence sample, a one-hour remote meeting, a written priority action plan and one follow-up call. The agreed sample, delivery date and follow-up arrangements are confirmed before work begins.
For a wider mock inspection, define what “wider” means for your service before comparing quotes. Does the provider include a site visit, staff and resident conversations where appropriate, observation, document review, a report and a follow-up? Ask how much time is allocated and what happens when a concern falls outside the agreed scope. Those questions make the comparison meaningful.
CQC says it requests evidence it needs and, apart from the annual provider information return for adult social care, does not require providers to submit evidence proactively or in one prescribed format. Good preparation means knowing how your existing records support decisions and improvements, not producing a special folder for its own sake.

Quick questions
Is the £249 Snapshot a CQC mock inspection? No. It is an independent, remote review of an agreed evidence sample with a one-hour discussion.
Will it tell us our future rating? No. Only CQC decides the outcome; this limited review cannot tell you what its rating will be.
Which package should I choose if I need a written action plan? Choose the £495 review, which includes the plan and one follow-up call. If you are unsure, book a free 30-minute conversation to agree what would help. The listed packages are £249 and £495; a smaller tailored scope and price may be available by agreement.
Looking Glass Care is independent and is not affiliated with CQC.
