Check the current official guidance for your setting and adapt local procedures before use. Future updates and bespoke consultancy are included only where expressly stated.

Free practical resource

A three-page winter readiness check for adult social care managers in England. Use it to identify practical gaps before cold weather disrupts staffing, visits, premises, equipment or communication. It is designed for a short team discussion followed by an action and a test, with space to record what still needs attention.

What is included

The resource includes a focused readiness checklist, an action and test record, a fictional disruption example and links to official cold-weather guidance. It prompts you to consider the needs of people using the service, responsible staff, current contacts, individual-plan references, communication arrangements and recovery. The checklist distinguishes an arrangement that exists on paper from one that has actually been checked.

How to use it

Choose the points relevant to your setting and mark other points as not applicable. Ask a colleague to walk through a realistic interruption, such as a delayed visit or a loss of heating, using the information they would have out of hours. Record the gap, the person responsible for the correction and a date to test it. Keep any person-specific clinical instructions in the authorised individual care plan and use this document to reference that plan.

Files and access

You receive a editable Microsoft Word document, the same PDF for reading or printing, and a short START-HERE guide in a ZIP file. The PDF is not a fillable form. You will need suitable software to open Word and PDF files and extract a ZIP archive. No subscription or separate consultation is included.

Download the free PDF now or download the free Word and PDF ZIP. These direct links need no checkout, account or email address.

Scope, version and permission

This is a planning aid, not a clinical protocol, emergency service or confirmation of regulatory compliance. Care homes, supported living and domiciliary services have different responsibilities; adapt the check to the service you actually provide. Follow current professional instructions, local escalation routes and relevant alerts. Do not use a generic checklist to change medication, treatment or specialist equipment arrangements.

Version 1.0, checked 11 October 2026 against UKHSA cold-health alert action card. Independent Looking Glass Care material; no government or regulator endorsement is claimed. Guidance can change, so use the linked official source for current requirements.

Use and adapt for your family or organisation. You may share the intact free resource with attribution. Share completed records only where appropriate and secure. Do not resell the blank resource or present it as your own paid product.
